Anyone know of any antenna companies in Dayton that will remove old aerial masts? We have a ~40' television aerial in a tight residential area that needs carefully removed.
TIA -- All hail JoePa |

| I'm not sure if the "antenna installers" listed in the phone book really deal with in-ground masts anymore. In fact, I'd think most general contractors could do the removal, but the height may be a problem.
Why does it have to come down ? Is it rusting to the point that it's likely to break ?
If you get any quotes, mind posting them here ? I'm curious what it would cost. |

| It was installed around 1960 and is rusted pretty bad. I'm in the process of getting a family member transitioned to DTV and that antenna is no longer going to be used, plus it poses a threat to their house and the neighbors,
The one-and-only "antennas" place left in the phone book quoted me $120. Seems worth it to not do it myself. -- All hail JoePa |

| $120 is all ? That seems real low... I'm picturing two or three guys and a rope tied to the antenna and slung over the house. One guy cuts a section off, then the other guy lowers it. The third guy (or the cutter could hurry down) gets it at the ground. Keep repeating this until it's down. Doesn't sound terribly difficult. The hardest part would be getting high enough to cut it into small, manageable pieces. |

| I guess the related question would be...does anyone live in downtown Dayton and use rabbit ears to get DTV signals? I tested a basic Radio Shack amplified set and they seem to work well enough. I really don't want to have to put up a new external antenna and try to run coax through a 1940's house. -- All hail JoePa |

| Downtown or even close to downtown should *not* require any smplification on an antenna. I'm in the Linden Heights neighborhood and am about 7 miles from the TV towers and used this

hanging in my tower-facing front window and got all the Dayton channels just fine.
Problem is, indoor antennas are hit-or-miss. Good thing is, they're cheap and easily returnable. |

Hall Premium,MVM join:2000-04-28 Dayton, OH | Depending how close to Boonshoft, they're in a "valley", aren't they ? That makes it difficult. You're not looking for 22, 45, and 16 either if you're after the digital channel versions. You want 51 (for 22), 30 (for 45), and 58 (for 16). |

Hall Premium,MVM join:2000-04-28 Dayton, OH | The area he's referring to is an older-type neighborhood and the homes are likely only a few feet apart. Depending where the tower is, there probably isn't room to get a truck close enough and have enough height left. |

| reply to Hall I meant 22/45/16's digital equivalent. The Toshiba HDTV they have maps the digital channel to the original station once you tune to the "new" channel.

| Is there any leftover antenna wiring from the old mast coming into the house?
Being in the "valley", with trees around, you will probably have to get some type of outdoor antenna to get the DTV signals, let alone any analog (until Feb 2009).
The outdoor antenna could probably be hooked to the chimney or one of the pipes venting gases from the sewage lines. And if there is any line still outside, it could be used to connect to the DTV box, with an adapter. -- PROUD TO BE THE DIRECTOR OF THE CRUNCHENSTEIN ASSOCIATION AND THE HOST OF CRUNCHENSTEIN #2 |

| The wiring is very brittle, old 300-ohm flat cable. So far, amplified rabbit ears seem to be doing the trick, but I am keeping the options open for an outside antenna. Problem is, all three of the rooms that have TV's in them are not accessible from the basement for one reason or another, and only one of the TVs was wired to the tower (remember those days when houses only had 1 TV?). -- All hail JoePa |

| Well, it came down. Guy was braver than me...climbed the rusty thing and sawsall'd it piece by piece...BY HIMSELF.
We're right on the borderline with the signal with these rabbit ears. 80% of the time the signal shows 92/100, but when the wind blows just right or it rains extremely hard, it flutters down to 40/100 and pixellates.
I wonder if anyone has tried this? »www.terrestrial-digital.com/lacrosse.html -- All hail JoePa |

| Where would you mount that ? They usually say, the cooler it looks or the less it looks like a regular antenna, the poorer it works...
I have one of these, 40" Boom Length, 17 Elements Outdoor Antenna for UHF-Only , in my attic. Get it at Radio Shack for only $30... |

I wonder if "remote sensing technology" is just another way to say "antenna". "Previously only available to the military" is meaningless; previous to what? 1929? 1959?

| reply to Hall Do you get the Cincy stations with that? I have been looking for a decent Antenna for my HDTV. right now I am just using one of those loop/rabbit ear antennas. It picks up channel 2 just great (the only local station TW doesn't carry yet) -- You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. - Abraham Lincoln |

| Depending on your location and how high you can mount it, you may be able to. Where I live, Oakwood is "above" me and blocks any reception from Cincy. It's also mounted in my attic, which hurts reception, but not in my case with the Dayton stations as I'm only 8 miles from them.
Indoor antennas are hit-or-miss. I do know of a guy in southern Beavercreek who uses a Silver Sensor, in his attic, I believe, and he's able to get Cincy stations. |

| I doubt I would get any Cincy stations even if I mounted it on the side of the house. I live close to Alex-Bell and 741 which is in a valley. -- You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. - Abraham Lincoln |

| reply to Hall Years ago before cable, I staked a pair of UHF Yagis and a VHF on a mast and rotor with a Winegard amp. From ZIP 43143 I could get Dayton 2, 7, 16, 22, 45 Columbus 4,6,10, 28 and 34. If the weather was right, I could get Cinci channel 19 and 48. Athens ch 20 was usually good too.
I tried to find an antenna mounted amp awhile back but they didn't make them any more. Prpbably a good thing since they won't work with DTV.
I guess I'll revisit the antenna solution since I don't want to pay extra for the cable company to get what I can get free. -- If dogs travel in space at the speed of light, do they reach their destination in dog-light years? |
